I really enjoy lifting weights and going for walks (and occasionally sprints and longish runs), but if I take more than one day off in a row regardless of the reason, I struggle mentally to get back to the gym. I get lazy.
I just don’t wanna!
But once I’m there, I’m all in. Back to business. Just like last night.
Because of my husband’s hospitalization last week for pneumonia, I didn’t make it into the gym at all. I snuck in one 10-minute Lift Weights Faster circuit at home on Tuesday, but that’s it. I spent all week doing AMRAP of sitting on my ass keeping my hubby company. ;-P
So I while I was eager to get back into my normal routine, I was also feeling super unmotivated to just get in the car and go to the gym. I went Saturday and was really dragging, as expected for so many days off. And then I procrastinated on going yesterday. Finally, around 6:30pm, I knew I had to just suck it up and go.
Once again, I was feeling pretty whipped and struggled at first. But once I got 10 minutes into it, I finally hit my groove and pushed on. It sucked from an energy standpoint. It kicked my ass. But I hit 100# first the first time on my clean and jerk (after missing the first try) and I completed a challenging kettlebell circuit after doing several high-rep sets of strict pull-ups.
The workout didn’t feel good, but the sense of accomplishment afterwards felt amazing. And that’s the thing to keep in mind.
Not every workout is going to feel great. You’re going to have workouts that are a complete struggle from start to finish. You’re going to have more days when you’re not motivated than you are days when you are fired up. It’s how you deal with the crappy days and moments of temptation that will dictate how successful you are in your pursuits.
You don’t have to be perfect, just consistent. Just willing to show up each and every day and do what’s needed to move you forward.
